Shoulder and Elbow Surgery

Dr. Roberto Rotini has been leading the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery department of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute since 2000. Author of over one hundred scientific articles, member of the most prestigious scientific reference companies, he has made five patents relating to shoulder and elbow. Since 2007 he has organized the international course of improvement of elbow surgery at Rizzoli.

Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Bologna in 1978
Specialties in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the University of Bologna and in Physiotherapy at the University of Parma.
From May 1980 to June 1989 Assistant and Medical Assistant in the Orthopedics and Traumatology department at the S. Maria Nuova Hospital of Reggio Emilia.
From July 1989 to June 2000 he was Medical Director at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institutes of Bologna in the department of the 1st Division.
Since June 2000 he has been in charge of an autonomous section of 11-bed Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
In Reggio Emilia he performed 698 surgeries mainly of hand surgery, lower limb osteosynthesis and knee arthroscopy.
To date, he has performed over 7,000 surgeries as the first operator (mainly knee, shoulder and elbow surgery).
At Rizzoli, he associated research activities with assistance.
Teaching at the Professional Nursing School in Reggio Emilia and Bologna in the period 1980-2000.
Since 2002 Contract Professor at the School of Specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology of the University of Bologna for the teaching of Shoulder and Elbow Pathology.
Participation as speaker or moderator in over 300 national and international conferences.
Publication of 6 chapters of books of orthopedic interest and 126 scientific works of orthopedic-traumatological interest of which 71 “index for PubMed”.
At the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute he was responsible for 16 current research projects and collaborated on 64 other projects.
He has made several patents with other collaborators:
• Orthopedic prosthesis for the treatment of epicondylitis;
• Mini-plate for revitalizing rotator cuff surgery;
• Post-operative tutor, particularly for shoulder operations;
• Shoulder prosthesis model;
• Plate system for proximal humerus osteosynthesis.
It has organized national congresses on shoulder and elbow pathology and since 2007, every two years, it organizes an international specialization course in elbow surgery (Rizzoli advanced elbow course).
Since 2002 he has been an associate member of SECEC (Societé Europenne de la Chirurgie de l’Epaule e du Coude), since 2013 he is an ordinary member.
He is part of the editorial board of Musculoskeletal Surgery magazine.
He has been a director since 2005, vice-president since 2009 and President of the Italian Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SICSeG) since 1 January 2013.
